　こんにちは！　篶囀（えんてん）です。
　ここ数日、ずいぶんと暑くなってきましたね。
　特に暑がりでなくても、少しの行動で汗をかきやすくなっています。
　仕事中はもちろん、外出の際の水分補給も欠かせません。
　やはり、今年の夏も「猛暑やむなし！」でしょうか。
　
　さて、ヨーロッパで6月といえば『ジューンブライド（6月の花嫁）』。新緑が美しくて、晴れの日が多いからというのがルーツの一つだそうですが、日本では緑が濃くなる時期としては共感できますが、晴れの日が多い・・という点に関しては？？となります。
　だって梅雨の真っただ中ですから、ネエ。

It’s gotten quite hot these past few days, hasn’t it?

Even if you’re not particularly sensitive to heat, you’ll find yourself sweating easily with even a little activity.

Of course, staying hydrated is essential while working, but also when going out.

It seems like another scorching summer is inevitable this year!

Now, in Europe, June is known as “June Bride.” One of the reasons for this is said to be the beautiful fresh greenery and the abundance of sunny days. While I can relate to the fact that it’s a time when the greenery becomes lush in Japan, I’m not so sure about the “abundance of sunny days” part.

Because, you know, it’s the middle of the rainy season.

明け安（易）き　夜を日に継や　水車
あけやすき　よをひにつぐや　みずぐるま

　夏は昼が長く、夜が短い。この「夜が短い」を井月は、「すぐに夜が明けてしまう」と体感したのです。
　しかも、夜が明けてそれで終わるのでなく「日に継ぐ」と表現したわけは、昼でも夜でも黙々と働き続ける水車を見て、「これは竹風だ！」と即座に脳裏に浮かんだからでしょう。
　この句には前書きとして「竹風子の勉励を」と記されています。

※　竹風は俳友でもあり、井月にとっては弟子でもあったので、竹風の後に『子』という敬称（愛称）を付しています。これは「〇〇君」等と同様の意味合いで、呼び捨てにしないで敬意や親しみを込める俳句の世界では古くからある慣習だそうです。

【篶囀の解釈】
　淡々と休むことなく回る水車の一途な仕事ぶりに人間臭い勤勉さを感じた井月の鋭い感覚。しかし、この句の水車に悲壮感はありません。水流の音とともに、カラカラ・サラサラと一定のリズムで軽快に回る、若くて力強い水車です。

明け易き夜を日に継ぐや水車

〇　竹風子　俳人。　「竹松銭弥、富県村南福地の人、昭和三年春歿八十六歳」（底本頭注）。
〇　「水車」の動きに竹風の勉励を重ねた。

In summer, the days are long and the nights are short. By saying that “the night is short,” Seigetsu was expressing the feeling that dawn comes almost at once.

What is more, he did not simply describe the night as ending with daybreak. Instead, he wrote that it “carries on into the day.” Most likely, as he watched a waterwheel tirelessly turning and working through both day and night, the thought instantly crossed his mind: “This is Chikufū!”

This interpretation is supported by the prefatory note attached to the haiku:

“On the diligence of Chikufū.”

Note: Chikufū was not only a fellow haiku poet but also, in a sense, a disciple of Seigetsu. For that reason, Seigetsu refers to him as “Chikufū-shi” (竹風子), adding the suffix -shi (子) after his name. In the haiku world, this was a traditional form of address used to convey respect and affection, much like saying “Mr. Chikufū” or “young Chikufū,” rather than referring to someone by name alone. It reflects the long-standing poetic custom of expressing both esteem and familiarity.

Seigetsu’s sharp perception found a human-like devotion to work in the waterwheel as it turned tirelessly, never ceasing in its task.

Yet this is no image of weary struggle. To the music of the running stream, the wheel revolves with a bright and effortless rhythm, its wooden parts clicking and rustling in time. It is a youthful waterwheel, vigorous and full of life.

↑　写真左は句碑の表面。　　右の裏面には『その昔どの集落にも水車があって　石臼で穀物を搗（つ）いたり藁など叩く動力源としたものです。自然の流水を引いているので昼も夜も大きく回っていました。井月さんの見たのは夜明けの早い夏の明けがたでした。　　　　愚良子書』　と書かれています。

篶囀 Enten
昔は、還暦には赤いちゃんちゃんこを贈り長寿のお祝いをしていたようです。 　さらに古希、喜寿、傘寿・・と長寿の御祝は続くのですが、平均寿命の延びが著しい現代では還暦の祝は「長寿」の祝でなく、「人生の節目」を祝う意味合いが濃くなっているようです。 　我が家でも「60・70は鼻たれ小僧」とばかり、御祝の『お』の字もなく淡々と過ごしてきました。 　私は還暦で第一の人生に区切りをつけ、『ご破算で願いましては・・』と第二の人生をスタート。（気持ちだけですが・・・） 　第二の人生においても既に鼻たれ小僧を通過して今や「中学1年生」、思春期真っ只中です。　　(o^―^o)ﾎﾎ　 　あれもやりたい、これもやりたいと、好奇心の塊で今は「井月」に熱中しています。
